About Me
I believe we are all better when we are connected to other people and to ourselves, whether it’s connecting to our minds, our bodies, or our intentions. I take a non-judgmental, LGBTQIA+ affirming stance, and I am genuinely interested in learning about people and the lives they live.
I support adults navigating workplace stress, life transitions, relationship difficulties, and the effects of trauma, grief, and loss. I’m interested in working with emerging adults exploring questions of identity and working professionals navigating life stresses and transitions. My approach is strengths-based and person-centered with a trauma-informed lens and an emphasis on narrative and meaning-making, and I draw from existential and cognitive-behavioral foundations. I am also pursuing a certificate in Trauma, Crisis, Grief, and Loss at Hood College as part of building a lifelong practice grounded in this work.
Before training as a counselor, I spent years as a working professional in high-pressure environments across startups and in the mental health field. Because of this, I have a direct understanding of the emotional and psychological toll of sustained workplace stress, and I know how hard it can be to stay connected to yourself while juggling demanding roles. Outside of therapy, I enjoy reading fiction, playing and designing games, hiking, and cooking. I live in Frederick, Maryland with my wife and my golden retriever.
Matthew is able to see clients located in Maryland and the District of Columbia under the supervision of Shani Banks.
